29/04/2004 Linux

Over the past few months I’ve continued
with my studies in System Administration
of Windows and Linux. The last 4 months
we have only been using Linux (Redhat 9.0 & Fedora).
It’s hard to describe how it feels to dive so deep
and fast into a new Operating System. It’s like
learning a new language and suddenly have to use
it daily to get through the day.
One thing I like to adress before I continue is
the attitude of non/anti-Linux users. I myself
was a non-Linux user for years and new no different.

I have a friend who has used it for years so I’ve
heard the usual talk of “the grass is greener on
the other side…”. Well I think now after using it
for at least 800 hours and learning it from a Red Hat
Certified Engineer I think I can speak freely about
the differences.
If your interested, got the time, or are forced to,
give it a go!! Its free!! which means you can download
the iso cd files from Redhat themselves and burn them off.

If you’d rather buy the cd’s your most welcome to do
that too, I recommend getting them with a book to
help you on your way.
I have to admit I’ve heard a lot of Microsoft bashing
whilst going down the Linux path, and in the same
breath must admit I’ve agreed with a lot of it and
disagreed with a lot of it.

It’s about the code….
and what we can do with our computers that matters,
who makes the huge bucks in this world isn’t very
interesting. If i choose to use Microsofts products
I will, if Linux is better for me for certain things
then I’ll use it. It dosn’t have to be a win or
loose situation. Just now I have Linux installed
on 3 of my computers and Windows on another three.

It’s about options and using what your best at,
using Linux does take time to learn for a MS clone
like me. But get over the hurdel and enjoy what comes
after. I’m not about to start dancing to Folk music
with Peter Stallman, but I am happy that Free software
is an option. And I’m thank-full to the people that
have given there time to write software and release
it for the masses to use.

With all this said I guess you need to now that I’m
writing this in Frontpage och a XP machine, but have
a Fedora Firewall machine next to me with three
Network cards which I configured myself yesturday….
and wrote most of the iptables myself. So I’ll
finished with saying, “Use both, don’t Bash#, be open,
don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, and I still
have All respect for the Windows Sys Admins out there!!
